A thermostat is a low-voltage switch. It takes 24 volts from the transformer in the furnace or air handler and sends it down separate wires to call for cooling, heat and the fan. When that signal is lost or wrong, the house acts like the AC or furnace is broken. The cause can be dead batteries, a loose or corroded wire at the terminals, the wrong setup for the type of system, or a sensor that reads several degrees off. A new smart thermostat can also drop out because the home has no common wire to power it.
The technician starts at the thermostat and follows the wires back to the equipment.

Common thermostat problems
The screen is blank and nothing turns on
On a thermostat that runs on batteries, start with fresh batteries. If it is powered by the system, the usual culprits are a tripped condensate float switch, a blown fuse on the furnace control board or a failed transformer. A tripped float switch means the condensate drain is backed up, so the drain gets cleared before the system is reset. A new thermostat will not fix any of those, so the technician finds what is cutting the 24 volts first.
It says cooling but the AC never starts
The technician checks whether the cooling call leaves the thermostat and reaches the outdoor unit. If it stops on the way, the wire is loose, broken in the wall or cut where it runs along the ground to the condenser, and the fix is a splice or a new wire. If the call arrives and the unit still does not start, the fault is at the outdoor unit, such as the contactor, capacitor or a safety switch.
Heat pump runs backwards after a thermostat change
The thermostat has to know whether the heat pump's reversing valve is powered on O for cooling or B for heating. If that setting is wrong, the system cools when you ask for heat and heats when you ask for cooling. Changing the setting fixes it. If the setting is right and the heat pump still blows cool on heat, the fault is in the heat pump itself, covered on the heat pump page.
The screen shows a different temperature than the room
Check where it is mounted. A thermostat near a supply vent, on an outside wall, in direct sun, or over an open hole in the wall that pulls air from the cavity reads the wrong temperature. Sealing the hole or moving the thermostat fixes it. A failing sensor means replacement.
My new smart thermostat keeps going offline
There is no common wire, so the thermostat borrows power through the heating or cooling wire. That causes resets, dropped Wi-Fi and odd cycling. The fix is connecting a spare wire as the common, running a new wire, or adding an adapter.
Short cycles after moving or replacing the thermostat
If the system started turning on and off every few minutes after the thermostat was moved or replaced, check the setup. A thermostat mounted near a supply register reaches the set temperature too fast and shuts the system off early. A cycle rate or temperature swing setting that is too tight does the same. Moving the thermostat or changing the setting fixes it.
Signs you need thermostat service
- Blank screen with fresh batteries: on a wired thermostat, no 24 volts from the system; on a battery-only model, a failed thermostat
- Fan runs all the time: fan set to On instead of Auto, or a stuck fan relay
- Heat comes on when set to cool: wires on the wrong terminals or the wrong heat pump setting
- Reading jumps several degrees: a failing sensor or air leaking from the wall hole behind it
- Screen works but the system never starts: a broken wire between the thermostat and the equipment
- Thermostat clicks but nothing runs: the call leaves the thermostat but the equipment does not answer it
- Wi-Fi thermostat resets on its own: not enough power without a common wire
What the visit includes
- The visit is a $65 diagnostic, and it is waived if you go ahead with the repair.
- The technician tests voltage at the thermostat and at the furnace or air handler to find where the signal stops.
- After testing, the technician tells you what failed and the price for the fix or a new thermostat before any work starts.
- For a new thermostat, the technician mounts it, labels and connects each wire, and sets it for your type of system.
- The technician switches the thermostat through cooling, heating and fan and checks that the outdoor unit, the furnace or air handler, and the blower each start.
Brands and equipment
We wire and service thermostats on split systems, furnaces, air handlers, heat pumps and rooftop package units, including equipment from American Standard, Lennox, Carrier, Trane, Goodman, Rheem, Daikin and Bryant. The technician sets the thermostat for the system you have, including heat pumps with backup electric heat. Samsung and Cooper & Hunter mini splits usually run from their own remote or wired controller, and the technician checks those on a mini split visit.
Where we do thermostats
Thermostats is available in all 14 cities we serve from our McKinney shop: McKinney, Frisco, Prosper, Plano, Allen, Celina, Anna, Melissa, Lucas, Murphy, Richardson, Garland, Sachse and Princeton.
Common questions
What does a new thermostat cost to put in?
The price depends on the thermostat you pick and whether the existing wires can be reused. You get the price before any work starts, and the visit is a $65 diagnostic, waived if you go ahead. The price goes up when the old wiring has too few conductors for the new thermostat and a new wire has to be pulled to the furnace or outdoor unit.
How fast can someone come out to look at my thermostat?
Often the same day, depending on the schedule. Pick a time online or call (469) 607-4241, and the technician brings a meter and common thermostat wire on the van.
How do I know if it is the thermostat or the AC?
A voltage test tells you. If the thermostat sends the call and the equipment gets it but does not run, the fault is in the AC or furnace. If the thermostat has no power or the call never leaves it, the thermostat or its wiring is the problem. Buying a new thermostat before that test can waste the money.
Do I need a C wire for a smart thermostat?
Usually yes. A Wi-Fi thermostat needs steady 24-volt power, and the C wire is what supplies it. Some models can run without one, but they borrow power through the heating or cooling wire. If there is no C wire, the technician checks the bundle for an unused wire before running a new one.
Will any thermostat work with my heat pump?
No. It has to be a thermostat that supports heat pumps, set up for your system: the reversing valve on O or B, plus any backup electric heat. A standard heat-and-cool thermostat cannot run the backup heat stage correctly.
