A washer that stops with water in the drum usually has a drain pump blocked by a sock, coins or a hair tie, or a pump motor that has burned out. If it fills and drains but will not spin, a common cause is a lid switch or door lock that is not telling the control the lid is shut, but a worn belt or broken motor coupler can do the same. A loud roar during the spin points to worn tub bearings. Banging and walking come from worn suspension rods or shock absorbers, and a leak at the front of a front-loader is often a torn door gasket.
Front-loads and top-loads fail in different places. A front-load has a door lock, a door gasket and usually a pump filter behind a small panel at the bottom front. A top-load has a lid switch or lid lock, and many drive the tub through a belt or a motor coupler.

Common washer problems
Washer will not drain and water sits
Something is caught in the drain pump or its filter, the drain hose is kinked, or the pump motor has failed. On many front-loads the pump filter sits behind a small panel at the bottom front, so a blockage there can be cleared without moving the washer. A pump with a failed motor is replaced.
It fills and agitates but will not spin
On a top-load, the lid switch or lid lock is a common cause. On a front-load, the door lock may not be latching or reporting locked. A worn belt, a broken motor coupler, or water that is not draining can also stop the spin.
Loud roaring or grinding during the spin
The tub bearings are worn, usually after water gets past the tub seal. Bearing replacement means taking the tub apart, so it is one of the bigger washer repairs.
Washer shakes, bangs and walks across the floor
Worn suspension rods on a top-load or worn shock absorbers on a front-load let the tub swing. An unlevel washer or one heavy item like a comforter can do the same. Worn suspension parts get replaced as a set.
Water leaking out onto the laundry room floor
On a front-load, check the door gasket for a tear. Other sources are a cracked fill hose, a loose drain hose, a leaking pump or a failed tub seal.
Washer will not fill or fills very slowly
The water inlet valve has failed or its screens are clogged with sediment, or a supply valve behind the washer is partly closed. Clogged screens can be cleaned, but a valve with a failed solenoid is replaced.
Washer symptoms and likely causes
- Water left in the drum after the cycle: clogged drain pump filter or failed drain pump
- Clothes come out soaking wet: the washer is not spinning, often a lid switch or door lock
- Door stays locked after the cycle: faulty door lock or water still in the tub
- Motor runs but the drum will not turn: broken motor coupler or worn belt
- Musty smell from a front-load: water and residue trapped in the door gasket or drain filter
- Washer will not start at all: door lock, lid switch, power supply or control board fault
- Error code on the display: the control has logged a fault, so write it down
How the repair goes
- You book online or call, and tell us the brand, whether it is top-load or front-load, and what it is doing.
- The technician runs the washer, checks the suspect parts, and shows you what failed. The $65 service call covers this diagnosis.
- You get the price before the repair starts, and the $65 is waived if you go ahead.
- If the part is on hand, the repair is done that visit. If it has to be ordered, it is installed on a return trip.
Before the visit
- Take the laundry out of the washer. Standing water can stay in the drum for the technician.
- Leave the washer plugged in with the water supply on, so the technician can run a cycle.
- Clear the space in front of the washer and the path into the laundry room.
- Write down the model number from the label inside the lid or door frame, and any error code.

Common questions
How much does it cost to fix a washer?
The service call is $65, and the repair price depends on the part that failed. The technician tells you the price before any work starts, and the $65 is waived if you go ahead. Clearing a clogged drain pump and replacing a lid switch are among the cheaper repairs. Tub bearings and control boards are at the expensive end.
Is it worth fixing a washer with bad bearings?
It depends on the condition of the rest of the washer. Replacing tub bearings means taking the tub apart, so it is a long job. On a machine with a sound motor, suspension and control, it can be worth doing. If an older washer also has worn shocks or a weak pump, the technician will tell you, and a new washer may be the better use of the money.
My washer is full of water. What should I do before you get there?
Turn off the washer and leave the water in the drum. Take out the clothes if you can reach them. If water is on the floor, close the two supply valves behind the washer until the technician finds the leak.
Why does my front-load washer smell?
Water and detergent residue collect in the door gasket folds and the drain pump filter. Wipe the gasket, leave the door open between loads, and run a cleaning cycle. If the smell stays, or water is left in the drum after each cycle, the drain pump or drain hose may be partly blocked, and that is worth a service call.
Do you repair Samsung and LG washers?
Yes. We repair Samsung and LG top-load and front-load washers, along with Whirlpool, GE, Bosch, KitchenAid, Kenmore, Maytag, Frigidaire and Amana.
