A range is a cooktop and an oven in one cabinet, fed by one power supply. An electric range runs on a 240V circuit through a double-pole breaker, a power cord and a terminal block on the back. A gas range burns gas but still plugs into a 120V outlet, and that plug powers the igniters, the clock and the controls for both halves. A dual-fuel range needs both: a gas line for the burners and a 240V circuit for the electric oven. On models with electronic controls, one control board often runs the cooktop and the oven together.

Common range problems

The cooktop and the oven are both dead

When both halves quit at the same time, the fault is usually in the shared supply. On an electric range, that is a tripped double-pole breaker, a burned power cord or a scorched terminal block. On a gas range, the 120V plug or outlet has lost power, which takes out the igniters on top and in the oven.

The display and touch controls stop working

On an electronic range, one control board reads the touch pad and switches the oven and, on many models, the cooktop elements too. A failed board or touch pad can shut down both halves or give wrong readings on both.

The oven door will not close flat

Each hinge has a spring and an arm that slides into a receiver in the range frame. A broken spring or a bent arm leaves the door hanging open at the top, which lets heat out. New hinges fit into the same receivers, and replacing both keeps the door even.

The drawer sticks or the warming drawer stays cold

A storage drawer runs on glides that bend or come off their track. A warming drawer has its own heating element and switch, so it can fail while the oven above it works.

The burners will not light or will not heat

Burner faults are the same on a range as on a stove: igniters, spark switches, elements and infinite switches. See our stove repair page for the detail.

The oven will not bake or broil

Bake and broil faults are the same on a range as on a standalone oven: elements, igniters and the temperature sensor. See our oven repair page for the detail.

Symptoms and likely causes

  • Clock, burners and oven all dead at once: tripped double-pole breaker, burned cord or terminal block, or no power at the gas range outlet
  • Burning smell from the back of the range and power cutting in and out: loose or scorched connection at the terminal block
  • Display blank or beeping with an error while the gas burners still light by match: control board or its power supply
  • Oven door hangs open at the top or drops hard when opened: broken hinge spring or bent hinge arm
  • Drawer will not slide or sits crooked: bent or loose drawer glide
  • Warming drawer stays cold while the oven works: failed warming drawer element or its switch

How the repair goes

  1. One $65 service call covers the cooktop and the oven, so both halves of the range are checked on the same visit.
  2. The technician checks the power supply first, then the control board, door, drawer and the burner or oven parts at fault. On a freestanding or slide-in range, that can mean pulling it out to take off the back panel.
  3. The technician gives you the repair price before starting. If you go ahead, the service call is waived.

Before the visit

  • Leave the range plugged in and the gas on so the technician can run the oven and burners.
  • Clear the cooktop, take the racks and pans out of the oven, and empty the storage drawer underneath.
  • Clear the floor in front of the range. Checking the cord, terminal block or back panel means sliding it out from the wall.
  • Note the model and serial number from the tag, often on the frame behind the storage drawer or oven door.

Common questions

How much does it cost to fix a range?

It depends on the part and where it sits. A hinge, drawer glide, power cord or terminal block is a small part. On an electronic range, one control board runs both halves, so that part is a bigger job. The $65 service call is waived if you go ahead, and you get the price first.

Will the technician need to pull my range out from the wall?

Sometimes. The power cord, terminal block and gas connection are behind a freestanding or slide-in range, so a fault there means sliding it out. Clear the floor in front of it before the visit. If a part has to be ordered, the technician sets up a return visit.

Is the service call $65 or $85 for a range?

It is $65 for a freestanding or slide-in range. The $85 rate is for a built-in wall oven, which is a separate appliance from a range. Either fee is waived if you go ahead with the repair.

Can I still use the burners if the oven is broken?

Yes, as long as there is no gas smell and nothing is sparking or smoking. The cooktop and oven have their own igniters, elements and switches, so one half can fail while the other works. If you smell gas, do not touch the knobs or any switch. Leave the house and call your gas company or 911 from outside.

Do you repair dual-fuel ranges?

Yes. A dual-fuel range has gas burners on top and an electric oven below, so it needs both a gas line and a 240V circuit. The technician checks both supplies before testing the parts. Tell us it is dual-fuel when you book.
