An ice maker needs a steady water supply through the inlet valve and fill tube, and a freezer cold enough to freeze each batch before it drops. A failing inlet valve, a clogged water filter, low supply pressure or a fill tube frozen shut will stop production or leave small, hollow cubes. If water gets in but ice never drops, the fault is usually in the ice maker assembly itself: the motor, the thermostat or the control that runs the harvest cycle. In-door ice makers on French-door models also depend on a fan and a tight compartment seal.

A freezer running warm, a clogged water filter or a failed inlet valve can each look like an ice maker fault. The technician checks all three before replacing a part.

Common ice maker problems

The ice maker stopped making ice at all

First check that the shutoff arm or switch is in the on position. After that, the usual causes are a failed water inlet valve, a frozen fill tube or a dead ice maker assembly. A meter test on the valve coil and the ice maker motor shows which part failed.

Cubes come out small, hollow or in clumps

Small or hollow cubes mean the mold is not filling all the way. A clogged water filter, low pressure at the supply line or a weak inlet valve is the usual cause. A new filter fixes some cases; others need a new valve.

Water leaks into the freezer or onto the floor

A leak behind the refrigerator is usually the supply line or the inlet valve fitting. A sheet of ice in the bin or on the freezer floor points to a frozen fill tube or a valve that does not shut off fully.

The ice maker in the door keeps freezing up

In-door ice makers on French-door refrigerators frost over when moist air gets past the compartment seal or door gasket. The frost can freeze the compartment fan, and then the ice melts and refreezes into clumps. Melting the ice out gets it running for a while. The lasting fix is to repair the seal, and to replace the fan or compartment heater if either has failed.

The dispenser will not push ice out the door

If the bin is full but nothing comes out, the auger motor, the dispenser switch or the door flap may have failed. Clumped ice jammed in the bin can also stall the auger, so emptying and breaking it up is the first check.

Ice is soft and the bin fills slowly

The freezer should hold near 0 degrees F. Warmer than that, the ice maker cycles slowly or stops. That is a cooling fault in the refrigerator, not the ice maker, and it is covered under refrigerator repair.

Symptoms and likely causes

  • Ice maker and door water both dead: the fault is upstream of the ice maker, at the supply line, the filter or the inlet valve
  • Water works at the door but no ice: the ice side of the inlet valve, a frozen fill tube or a failed ice maker assembly
  • Small or hollow cubes: clogged water filter or low water pressure
  • Sheet of ice in the bin or on the freezer floor: inlet valve not shutting off or a frozen fill tube
  • Clicking or grinding at the dispenser: jammed ice or a failing auger motor
  • Frost covering the ice maker in the door: moist air getting past the compartment seal or door gasket
  • Slow production and soft ice: freezer running warmer than about 0 degrees F

How the repair goes

  1. The $85 call pays for the visit and for finding the fault. If you go ahead with the repair, it comes off the bill.
  2. The technician checks the freezer temperature, the water supply, the inlet valve and the ice maker's harvest cycle to find the failed part.
  3. The technician tells you the price before any work starts.

Before the visit

  • Leave the refrigerator plugged in and the ice maker switched on so the technician can see the fault.
  • Empty the ice bin if it is full or the ice has frozen into a clump, and clear the shelf under it.
  • Write down the model number from the label inside the refrigerator and have it ready when you book.
  • Make sure the technician can reach the back of the refrigerator and the water shutoff valve.

Common questions

How much does ice maker repair cost?

It depends on the part. The $85 service call is waived if you go ahead with the repair. A water inlet valve costs less to replace than a full ice maker assembly. Replacing the assembly or an in-door ice maker costs more, and the technician tells you the price before the repair starts.

How long does a repaired ice maker take to make ice again?

Plan on about a day. The freezer has to get back down to temperature and the mold has to fill and freeze before the first batch drops. Throw out the first few batches after a new valve or ice maker goes in, since they can carry air and loose sediment from the line.

Is it worth fixing the ice maker or should I replace the fridge?

An ice maker fault on its own is a repair, not a reason to replace the refrigerator. The inlet valve, the ice maker assembly and the dispenser parts each replace individually without touching the sealed cooling system. A compressor or sealed system fault is a larger repair, and the technician prices it separately.

Can I reset the ice maker myself?

Yes, many ice makers have a reset or test button, and it is worth trying once. Where it sits depends on the brand, so check the owner's manual. If ice does not come back within a day, a part has failed and resetting again will not fix it.

Should I turn off the water if the ice maker is leaking?

Yes, if water is pooling on the floor, close the shutoff valve for the refrigerator's water line. It is usually under the kitchen sink or behind the refrigerator. Leave the refrigerator plugged in so the food stays cold.

Do you fix the ice maker in the door of a French-door fridge?

Yes. We repair in-door ice makers on Samsung, LG and other French-door refrigerators. The usual parts are the compartment seal, the compartment fan and heater, and the auger motor that pushes ice out the door.
