Service call $65 to $85, $85 for built-in ovens, waived with repair. Open 7 days, 7am to 7pm.

An electric oven bakes with a lower element and broils with an upper one. When an exposed bake element burns out, you can often see a break or blister on it. Many newer ovens hide the element under the oven floor, so it has to be tested with a meter. Most gas ovens light with a hot surface igniter, and a worn igniter can glow without ever opening the gas valve. An oven that runs hot or cold points to the temperature sensor or the control board. An oven that goes completely dead after a self-clean cycle often has a blown thermal fuse.

A range oven is repaired in place. Elements, igniters and sensors come out from inside the oven, and the range is pulled from the wall when the job needs the back panel off. A built-in wall oven often has to come out of the cabinet onto a lift cart before the technician can reach the wiring and parts behind it.

Common oven problems

The oven will not heat but the stovetop works

On an electric oven, the bake element has burned open or a relay on the control board has stopped sending it power. On a gas oven, the igniter has worn out and the burner does not light. The fix is the element, igniter or board.

The oven runs hotter or colder than the setting

The temperature sensor on the back wall tells the control when to cycle the heat. If the sensor reads wrong, the oven overshoots or never gets there. The technician checks the sensor with a meter and replaces it or the control.

Food burns on the bottom and stays pale on top

The heat is coming mostly from below. On many electric ovens the broil element helps during bake, so a dead broil element leaves the bottom doing all the work. A stuck relay on the control or a sensor reading low can also keep the bake element on too long. In convection mode, a stopped fan does the same thing. Testing each element, the sensor and the fan shows which one.

The oven door will not unlock after self-clean

The lock stays latched until the cavity cools, which can take a while after a cleaning cycle. If the oven is cool and the door is still locked, the lock motor, the lock switch or the control has failed.

The display is blank and nothing turns on

Check the breaker first, and on a gas range make sure it is still plugged in. Past that, the cause is a blown thermal fuse, a burned wire or terminal at the back of the oven, or a failed control board.

The convection fan is loud or does not spin

The convection fan motor sits behind the back panel of the oven cavity. Worn bearings make it grind or squeal, and a failed motor stops it altogether. The fix is a new fan motor, and sometimes the element around it.

Symptoms and likely causes

  • Electric oven heats only from the top: burned-out bake element, often with a visible break
  • Gas oven igniter glows but the burner never lights: worn igniter
  • Oven runs well above or below the set temperature: failed temperature sensor or control board
  • Preheat takes much longer than it used to: one element out or a weakening gas igniter
  • Oven dead after a self-clean cycle: blown thermal fuse or a failed control board
  • Door stays locked after the oven has cooled: failed door lock motor or lock switch
  • Grinding or squealing from the back of the oven: worn convection fan motor

How the repair goes

  1. The service call is $65 for a range or stove oven and $85 for a built-in wall oven.
  2. The technician tests the elements or igniter, the temperature sensor, the wiring and the control, then shows you which part failed.
  3. You get the price before the repair starts, including whether a built-in oven has to come out of the cabinet. The service call is waived if you go ahead.
  4. If a part has to be ordered, the technician schedules a return visit to install it.

Before the visit

  • Leave the oven connected and the breaker on so the technician can run it and watch it heat.
  • Take the pans out of the oven and empty the storage drawer. On many ranges the drawer comes out so the technician can reach the parts below the oven.
  • Do not run a self-clean cycle to test the oven. The extra heat can blow the thermal fuse on an oven that already has a fault.
  • Note the model and serial number from the label on the frame inside the oven door or behind the storage drawer.

Common questions

How much does it cost to fix an oven?

It depends on the part that failed. The service call is $65 for a range oven and $85 for a built-in oven, waived if you go ahead with the repair. A bake element or gas igniter comes out from inside the oven and is a small part. A control board sits behind the panel and the part itself costs more, so that repair runs higher.

How soon can you come out to fix my oven?

Same-day appointments are often available, online or at (469) 607-4241. If it is a built-in wall oven, say so when you book, because some have to come out of the cabinet onto a lift cart for the repair.

Why does my gas oven take so long to light?

That points to a weak hot surface igniter. The igniter has to heat up enough to open the gas valve, and as it wears it takes longer to get there. Eventually the burner stops lighting at all. A new igniter fixes it, and if it does not, the gas valve is the next part to test.

Will the self-clean cycle damage my oven?

It can. Self-clean heats the oven cavity far above any baking temperature, and on an oven that already has a weak part, that heat can blow the thermal fuse or damage the control board. Wiping out spills by hand avoids running the cycle at all.

Do you repair built-in wall ovens?

Yes, single and double wall ovens, gas and electric. The service call for a built-in oven is $85, and the technician tests it in place before deciding whether it needs to come out of the cabinet.

Can I check my oven temperature myself?

Yes, with an oven thermometer on the middle rack. Set the oven to 350 degrees and check it a few times after it has run 20 minutes, because the temperature swings above and below the setting as the oven cycles. If the average stays well off, many controls let you adjust the offset from the menu. A reading that keeps drifting needs the sensor or control tested.
