Dryer Repair in McKinney, TX

Service call $65, waived with repair. Open 7 days, 7am to 7pm.

A dryer is a drum turned by a belt and motor, a heat source, and a blower that pushes hot, damp air out the vent. Most dryer failures come from one of those four parts or from a vent that cannot move air.

The vent matters on any dryer call. A lint-packed vent is what blows thermal fuses in the first place, so a new fuse without a clear vent will blow again.

Common dryer problems

Dryer tumbles but the clothes come out cold

On an electric dryer, look at the heating element, thermal fuse, high-limit or cycling thermostat, or one tripped half of the double breaker. On a gas dryer, look at the igniter, flame sensor, gas valve coils or thermal fuse. The technician meters each part and replaces the one that failed.

Loads take two or three cycles to dry

Most often a restricted vent or a crushed duct behind the dryer. A failing cycling thermostat can do it too, and on a gas dryer, weak gas valve coils let the burner go out and fail to relight mid-cycle.

Nothing happens when I press start

A bad door switch, start switch or thermal fuse, since on many models the fuse cuts the motor as well as the heat. A failed motor or control board is less common and costs more to fix.

The drum does not turn

If the motor runs and the drum stays still, the drive belt has broken. If the motor hums but does not spin, look for a seized idler pulley, a seized motor or something jammed between the drum and the cabinet. On models with a belt switch, a broken belt stops the motor, so the dryer can seem dead.

Loud thumping, squealing or grinding while it runs

Worn drum rollers, a dry idler pulley, worn drum glides or a failing rear drum bearing. The technician opens the cabinet, finds the worn parts and replaces them, and checks the belt while it is off.

Burning smell when the dryer is running

Lint built up around the heater or burner, a belt slipping on a seized pulley, or a motor overheating. The technician cleans out the cabinet and replaces the failing part.

Symptoms and likely causes

  • Tumbles with no heat: heating element, thermal fuse, or the igniter on a gas dryer
  • Takes two cycles to dry: blocked vent or a failing cycling thermostat
  • Nothing happens at start: door switch, start switch or thermal fuse
  • Drum stays still while the motor runs: broken drive belt
  • Thumping or squealing: worn drum rollers, idler pulley or drum glides
  • Burning smell: lint near the heater or a belt slipping on a seized pulley

How the repair goes

  1. The $65 service call covers the trip to your home and the diagnosis of the dryer.
  2. The technician checks power and venting, then tests the heat source, fuses, thermostats, belt and motor to find the failed part.
  3. The technician tells you the price before any work starts, and the $65 is waived if you go ahead with the repair.
  4. If a part has to be ordered, the technician schedules a return visit.

Before the visit

  • Leave the dryer plugged in, and the gas on for a gas dryer, so the technician can run it. If it smelled like burning, leave it unplugged and the gas off.
  • Empty the drum and clean the lint screen.
  • Clear a path to the laundry room and enough space to pull the dryer away from the wall.
  • Note the brand and model number from the label inside the door opening or on the back panel.

Common questions

How much does dryer repair cost?

The service call is $65, and it is waived if you go ahead with the repair. Replacing a thermal fuse or drive belt costs less than replacing a motor, control board or gas valve. You get the price before the repair starts.

How soon can someone come look at my dryer?

Same-day dryer appointments are often available. Call (469) 607-4241 or pick a time online, any day from 7am to 7pm. Before the visit, clear enough room to pull the dryer out from the wall so the vent connection can be checked.

Why does my dryer keep blowing the thermal fuse?

Most often because the vent is restricted. The fuse opens when the air inside the dryer gets too hot, and a lint-packed or crushed vent is what traps the heat. A cycling thermostat stuck closed can do it too. The vent and the duct behind the dryer need to be clear before a new fuse goes in.

Is it safe to use a dryer that smells like burning?

No. Stop the dryer, unplug it or turn off its breaker, and close the gas shutoff on a gas dryer. Lint packed around the heater or burner can catch fire. Leave it off until a technician has opened the cabinet.

How can I tell if my dryer vent is restricted?

Run the dryer on high heat and hold your hand at the outside vent hood. You should feel a strong flow of warm air. If the flow is weak or the hood flap barely opens, the vent is likely restricted. Also check that the flexible duct behind the dryer is not crushed against the wall.
