A refrigerator cools by blowing air across a cold evaporator coil in the freezer and pushing the heat out through a condenser coil at the bottom or back. When the fresh-food side goes warm and the freezer stays cold, the evaporator fan has stopped or the coil has frosted over because a defrost heater, defrost thermostat or control failed. When both sides go warm, check the condenser fan, dusty condenser coils, the compressor start parts, the compressor itself, or a refrigerant leak. Water on the floor usually comes from a frozen defrost drain or a leaking water valve or line.

Many refrigerator failures are in parts outside the sealed system: fans, defrost heaters, defrost thermostats, start relays, control boards, door gaskets and water valves. The sealed system is the compressor, the coils and the refrigerant lines between them. A repair there means opening the lines, replacing the filter drier and recharging the refrigerant, so it is the largest job on a refrigerator. When the price gets close to the cost of a new unit, the technician will say so, and the decision is yours.

Common refrigerator problems

The fridge is warm but the freezer is cold

The fresh-food side gets its cold air from the freezer. If the evaporator fan has stopped, or the coil is packed with frost from a failed defrost heater, thermostat or control board, that air stops coming through.

Both the fridge and the freezer are warm

Start with the condenser fan and the coils under or behind the unit. A dusty coil or a dead fan makes the compressor overheat and shut off. If the compressor clicks and will not run, the start relay, the inverter board or the compressor has failed.

Water puddling on the floor under the fridge

A frozen or clogged defrost drain sends melt water out the front instead of into the drain pan. A cracked water inlet valve, filter housing or supply line leaks from the back. A drain that freezes again after it is cleared usually points to a failed drain heater or defrost part.

Loud buzzing, rattling or grinding from the fridge

The usual sources are a freezer fan blade hitting ice, a worn condenser fan motor, or a compressor straining to start. Where the noise comes from, the freezer compartment or the bottom back panel, tells the technician which one it is.

Ice building up on the freezer back wall

Frost on the rear panel means the defrost cycle is not running: a burned-out heater, a failed defrost thermostat or a bad control. Frost on the food and shelves near the door points to a torn or loose door gasket instead.

Food freezing in the fresh food section

The damper that lets freezer air into the fridge side is stuck open, or a temperature sensor or control is reading wrong. Either one is a much smaller repair than anything in the sealed system.

Symptoms and likely causes

  • Freezer cold, fridge warm: evaporator fan stopped or a frosted coil from a defrost failure
  • Clicking every few minutes with no cooling: failed start relay, overload or inverter board
  • Water under the crisper drawers: frozen or clogged defrost drain
  • Weak cooling and little or no air moving at the bottom grille: dirty condenser coils or a failed condenser fan
  • Frost on the food near the door: torn or loose door gasket
  • No water from the dispenser or a slow trickle: frozen supply line or failed water inlet valve
  • Fridge runs all the time and never cycles off: dirty coils, a failing control or low refrigerant

How the repair goes

  1. Refrigerators, built-in ovens and ice makers carry an $85 service call, which pays for the trip and for finding the failed part in your kitchen.
  2. The technician checks the fans, defrost parts, controls and compressor circuit, then tells you which part failed.
  3. The technician tells you the price before any work starts. Say yes to the repair and the $85 comes off the bill.
  4. If a part has to be ordered, the technician schedules a return visit.

Before the visit

  • Leave the refrigerator plugged in and running so the technician can see the problem as it happens.
  • Do not defrost the freezer by hand before the visit. The frost pattern shows the technician what failed.
  • Move perishable food to a cooler and clear the space in front of the refrigerator and around the bottom grille.
  • Note the model and serial number from the label inside the fresh-food section (side wall, ceiling or under the crisper drawers) or inside the freezer.

Common questions

How much does it cost to fix a refrigerator?

It depends on the part that failed. The service call is $85 and is waived if you go ahead with the repair. A new fan motor, defrost heater or door gasket costs far less than sealed-system work, and the technician tells you the price before any work starts.

How fast can someone come look at my fridge?

Same-day appointments are often available. Book online for any day of the week, 7am to 7pm, or call (469) 607-4241. Until the technician gets there, keep the doors shut. The USDA says a closed refrigerator keeps food cold for about 4 hours.

Is it worth fixing a refrigerator with a bad compressor?

Sometimes, depending on the age and model of the refrigerator. A compressor replacement means opening the sealed system, replacing the filter drier and recharging the refrigerant. The technician prices it, tells you how it compares to replacing the unit, and you decide.

Do you fix the ice maker and water dispenser too?

Yes. Mention the ice maker or dispenser when you book so the technician checks it on the same visit. An ice maker on its own is also an $85 service call.

Should I clean my refrigerator coils myself?

Yes, it is safe to do. Unplug the refrigerator, take off the bottom grille or back panel, and vacuum the dust off the condenser coil and fan. Dusty coils make the compressor run hotter and longer, and they are one of the causes of a fridge that will not cool.
