A new air conditioner only performs as well as the install. The mistakes that cause trouble later are a condenser sized from the old unit's label instead of the house, a new condenser paired with an old indoor coil, a reused line set that was never checked, a refrigerant charge that was never measured, and an attic drain pan with no float switch. Each one shows up as warm rooms, short run cycles, a higher power bill or water in the ceiling.

What goes wrong with an install

New AC cannot hold the set temperature

Three install mistakes can cause it: a condenser too small for the house, supply and return ducts too small for the new unit's airflow, or a refrigerant charge never checked against the manufacturer's numbers. The fix starts with a load check, a duct inspection and a charge measurement.

Oversized new AC leaves the house clammy

A system that is too large cools the air fast and shuts off before it pulls humidity out, so the house feels clammy. It happens when the new unit's tonnage is copied from the old label without measuring the house.

Water dripping from the attic after the install

The condensate drain is sloped wrong, has no trap, or the drain pan has no float switch. Correcting the drain line and adding a float switch stops the leak and shuts the unit off before the pan overflows.

New outdoor unit but the power bill stayed high

A new condenser connected to the old indoor coil may not reach its rated efficiency or capacity. Installing a coil that matches the condenser, then checking the charge, lets the system run the way it was designed.

Breaker trips when the new AC starts up

The breaker or wire size does not match what the new unit's nameplate calls for, or a connection is loose. The fix is sizing the breaker and wire to the nameplate and tightening every connection at the disconnect and the unit.

Signs you need a new AC

  • Rooms far from the air handler stay warm: undersized equipment or ductwork that needs work
  • Unit runs in short bursts and the house feels damp: system too large for the house
  • New addition or finished room with no cooling: new duct runs if the current system has the capacity, otherwise its own system or a ductless mini split
  • Older system facing a major repair: /hvac/ac-replacement/ covers pricing the repair against a new system

How an install goes

  1. If your current system has stopped working, the $65 diagnostic finds what failed, and it is waived if you go ahead with the repair.
  2. The technician looks at the house, the ductwork, the electrical and the existing coil, then recommends a system size and model.
  3. You get the price for the full install, equipment and labor, before any work starts.
  4. On install day the crew sets the condenser, connects the coil, line set and wiring, pulls a vacuum and charges the system.
  5. A correct install ends with the system running and the temperature drop between the return and supply air and the condensate drain checked.

Brands and equipment

We install and service equipment from American Standard, Lennox, Carrier, Trane, Goodman, Rheem, Daikin, Bryant, Samsung and Cooper & Hunter. Residential installs are split systems: an outdoor condenser or heat pump with a matching evaporator coil on a furnace or air handler, often in the attic. We also install ductless mini splits and work on rooftop package units on commercial buildings.

Where we do ac installation

AC Installation is available in all 14 cities we serve from our McKinney shop: McKinney, Frisco, Prosper, Plano, Allen, Celina, Anna, Melissa, Lucas, Murphy, Richardson, Garland, Sachse and Princeton.

Common questions

How much does a new air conditioner cost?

It depends on the tonnage, the SEER2 efficiency rating and what has to change at the house, and you get the price at your home before any work starts. The price covers the condenser, the matching coil, and any line set, electrical or duct work the job needs. A swap on sound ductwork and wiring costs less than a job that needs new ducts, a new line set or a larger breaker.

How soon can you install a new AC?

It depends on when the equipment is available. Same-day appointments are often available for the visit where the technician looks at the house and gives you the price. Install day is set once you go ahead and the equipment is in.

What size AC does my house need?

It depends on the house, not square footage alone. A correct install starts with sizing the system for the house: square footage, ceiling height, windows, insulation, which way the house faces, and whether the ductwork can carry the airflow.

Can you reuse my existing refrigerant line set?

Sometimes, if it is the right size and in good shape. The line diameters have to match what the new condenser's install instructions call for, and the lines have to hold pressure. If they are the wrong size, kinked or leaking, the job needs a new line set.

Does the drain pan in my attic need a float switch?

Yes, when the coil or air handler sits in the attic above a finished ceiling. The float switch shuts the system off when the pan fills, before water reaches the ceiling. A correct install includes one when the coil sits above a finished ceiling.

Will my breaker or disconnect need to be upsized for a new AC?

It depends on the new unit's nameplate. Each condenser lists a minimum circuit ampacity and a maximum breaker size. If the existing breaker, wire or disconnect does not match those numbers, the job includes the change.
