Stove Repair in McKinney, TX
SmartWay repairs gas and electric stoves in McKinney and 13 nearby cities from our shop on N McDonald St. The service call is $65.
Service call $65, waived with repair. Open 7 days, 7am to 7pm.
On a gas stove, each burner has an igniter that sparks against the burner cap, and a spark switch behind each knob tells the spark module when to fire. On an electric stove, each knob turns an infinite switch that cycles power to a coil or radiant element. Touch-control glass tops use a control board in place of the switches.
Newer gas stoves have sealed burners: the burner base is fixed to the cooktop, so a boil-over stays on top and clogs the burner ports and igniter instead of dripping inside. Older open burners lift out and have a drip pan underneath. A glass smooth top is one sheet of glass-ceramic, so a crack anywhere means replacing the whole panel, not just the area over one burner.

Common stove problems
The burner clicks but the flame will not light
Food or water in the burner ports, a burner cap sitting crooked, or a cracked igniter that sparks too weakly to catch the gas. Cleaning the ports and seating the cap fixes some of these. A cracked igniter gets replaced.
The igniter keeps clicking after the burner lights
Water or cleaning spray has run behind a knob and shorted its spark switch, or a switch or the spark module has failed. If it keeps clicking once everything is dry, the technician replaces the switch or the module.
One electric coil burner will not heat up
The coil element has burned out, or the receptacle it plugs into is scorched and no longer makes contact. The technician tests it by plugging a known-good coil into that position with the controls off and the burners cool. If the good coil also stays cold, the receptacle or the infinite switch behind the knob has failed.
Glass top burner stays on high at every setting
The infinite switch behind the knob controls how often the element cycles on. When its contacts stick shut, the burner runs at full heat no matter the setting. A new switch fixes it. Touch-control cooktops use a control board instead.
The gas burner lights on high but goes out on low
A burner cap sitting off center or partly clogged ports leave the small simmer flame too weak to stay lit. Some gas valves also have a low-flame adjustment that can be set too low. The technician cleans and seats the burner first, then checks the valve setting.
The touch controls on a glass cooktop do not respond
Check that the control lock is off and wipe any liquid off the glass over the touch pads, since both stop the controls. If the panel still does not respond, the touch control board or the wiring to it has failed.
No burners work at all
An electric cooktop is wired to its own double-pole breaker, so check that breaker first and reset it once if it has tripped. A gas cooktop plugs into an outlet, often inside the cabinet below, and loses its igniters without power. If power is reaching the cooktop, the technician tests the wiring, the terminal block and the controls.
Symptoms and likely causes
- Clicking with no flame: clogged burner ports, a crooked cap or a cracked igniter
- Clicking that never stops: a wet or failed spark switch, or a bad spark module
- One coil burner cold: burned-out element or a scorched burner receptacle
- Smooth top burner stuck on high: failed infinite switch or control board
- Only the inner ring of a dual element heats: failed outer element or a bad dual-element switch
- Hot surface light stays on after the glass has cooled: the element's limiter or the indicator switch
- Electric burner turning on and off at low settings: normal cycling from the infinite switch
- Crack or chip in the glass top: stop using the cooktop until the glass is replaced
How the repair goes
- Pick a time online or call (469) 607-4241, and say whether the stove is gas or electric and which burners act up.
- The technician tests the igniters, switches, elements and wiring, and shows you which part failed.
- The technician tells you the price before any work starts, and if you go ahead with the repair, the $65 service call comes off the bill.
- If the part has to be ordered, such as a glass cooktop or a control board, the technician sets up a return visit to install it.
Before the visit
- Note the model number. On most stoves it is on a label behind the storage drawer or on the frame inside the oven door.
- Leave the stove plugged in and the gas on so the technician can watch the problem happen, unless it has been sparking, smoking, tripping the breaker, or a burner is stuck on. In those cases turn the breaker off or shut the gas valve and tell us when you book.
- Take pots and pans off the cooktop and clear the floor in front of the stove, because checking the power cord and terminal block means pulling it away from the wall.
- If you smell gas with every burner off, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside before booking.

Common questions
How much does it cost to fix a stove?
It depends on the part. The service call is $65 and is waived if you go ahead. An igniter, spark switch, element or burner receptacle is one of the cheaper repairs. A glass top or a touch control board is the expensive end, and on an older stove it can come close to the price of a new cooktop. You get the price before any work starts.
How fast can someone come out to fix my stove?
Same-day appointments are often available, and the online scheduler shows the open times. Until then you can keep cooking on the burners that work, unless the glass is cracked or you smell gas.
Why does my gas stove keep clicking?
Usually a spark switch behind a knob is wet or has failed. Unplug the stove and leave it off for a day so the switch can dry. If the clicking comes back when you plug it in again, the switch or the spark module needs replacing, and the $65 service call covers finding which one.
Can I keep using a glass cooktop with a crack in it?
No. Spills can run through a crack onto the elements and wiring underneath, and the glass can break further as it heats. Turn the cooktop off at the breaker until the glass panel is replaced as one piece.
Do you work on both gas and electric stoves?
Yes. Gas and electric stoves have the same $65 service call. A gas stove needs the gas left on for the visit so the technician can test the igniters.
Is a stove the same thing as a range?
Mostly, yes. A range is a cooktop and an oven in one unit, and most people call it a stove. A cooktop is only the burners, set into the counter. The service call is $65 for a stove, range or cooktop. Oven problems are covered on our oven repair page.
