A dishwasher fills, heats and sprays water, then drains it. The water inlet valve lets water in, and a float switch shuts the valve off if the water gets too high. A circulation pump pushes that water through the spray arms. A drain pump sends it out through the hose to the sink drain or the garbage disposal. A clogged filter, a stuck float, a failed pump or a worn door gasket will stop one of those jobs, and the symptom you see points to which part failed.
Most of these parts are reached from inside the tub or behind the lower kick panel, so the dishwasher rarely has to be pulled out of the cabinet to find the problem.

Common dishwasher problems
Water is sitting in the bottom after a cycle
The drain path is blocked or the drain pump has failed. We check the filter, the sump, the drain hose and the connection at the disposal or sink drain. The fix is a cleaning, a cleared hose, or a new drain pump.
Dishes come out dirty or gritty
A clogged filter, plugged spray arm holes, a weak circulation pump or too little water from a failing inlet valve. Cleaning the filter and spray arms needs no new parts. A pump or valve is a parts job.
Water leaking onto the kitchen floor
A worn door gasket, a loose hose clamp underneath, a cracked spray arm or a failed pump seal. Regular dish soap in the machine also causes leaks from suds. We pull the lower kick panel to find the source.
The lights come on but it will not start
A door latch or door switch that does not close the circuit, a control lock or delay start left on, a failed touchpad, or a failed control board. We test the latch and door switch first because they cost less than a board.
It hums but no water comes in
The water supply valve under the sink may be closed. If it is open, the inlet valve or its solenoid has usually failed, or the float switch is stuck up. Replacing the inlet valve is a parts job done from behind the lower kick panel.
Dishes are still wet at the end
Check that heated dry is on and the rinse aid dispenser is full. On models with a heating element, a failed element or high-limit thermostat stops the drying heat. Many models have no exposed element and dry by condensation, and they depend on rinse aid.
Dishwasher symptoms and likely causes
- White film or spots on glasses: hard water or an empty rinse aid dispenser
- Top rack comes out dirty but the bottom is clean: blocked upper spray arm or feed tube
- Water keeps filling past the normal level: an inlet valve stuck open
- Door drops open or will not stay up: broken door springs or cables
- Loud grinding or buzzing during the wash: debris in the pump or a failing pump motor
- Cycle stops partway through: door latch problem, float switch, or a control fault
- Detergent cup still closed at the end: a dish blocking the door, or a failed dispenser latch or actuator
- Bad smell from the tub: food trapped in the filter, sump or drain hose
How the repair goes
- You book online or call (469) 607-4241.
- The technician runs a cycle, checks the filter and sump, and tests the pumps, inlet valve, door switch and drain connection.
- The $65 covers the visit and finding the failed part. If you approve the repair, you do not pay the $65 on top of it.
- The technician tells you the price before any work starts, and you decide whether to go ahead.
Before the visit
- Unload the dishes and racks so the technician can reach the filter, spray arms and sump.
- Clear out the cabinet under the sink. The water supply valve and drain hose connection are there.
- Find the model number on a tag along the edge of the door or the side of the tub, and have it ready when you book.
- Leave the power and water on unless it is leaking. If it is leaking, shut off the valve under the sink.

Common questions
How much does dishwasher repair cost?
The service call is $65, and it is waived if you go ahead with the repair. The repair price depends on the part. Clearing a clogged filter or drain hose is one of the cheaper jobs. A new drain pump or inlet valve costs more, and a control board or circulation pump is at the top of the range. You get the price before the repair starts.
How soon can someone look at my dishwasher?
Same-day appointments are often available. Call (469) 607-4241 or book online, any day from 7am to 7pm. Tell us whether it is not draining, leaking or not starting, so the technician knows what to check first.
Is some water in the bottom of the dishwasher normal?
A small amount under the filter is normal. Most dishwashers keep a little water in the sump to protect the pump seal. Water sitting above the filter or up on the tub floor after a finished cycle means the machine is not draining.
My dishwasher stopped draining right after a new disposal went in. What happened?
The drain inlet on the new disposal is most likely still sealed. Disposals ship with a plastic knockout plug in the port where the dishwasher drain hose attaches. If the hose was connected without knocking that plug out, the dishwasher pumps against a dead end and water stays in the tub.
Can I keep using my dishwasher if it is leaking?
No, stop running it until it is checked. Water under the machine soaks into the cabinet base and subfloor where you cannot see it.
Do I need to clean my dishwasher filter?
Yes, on most newer dishwashers. Many models have a manual filter under the lower spray arm that twists out for rinsing. Check the owner's manual for how often. A packed filter leaves grit on dishes, causes smells and slows draining.
