Furnace Repair in McKinney, TX

SmartWay repairs gas and electric furnaces in McKinney and 13 nearby cities under Texas Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Contractor License TACLA00108954C.

Diagnostic $65, waived with repair. Texas license TACLA00108954C. Open 7 days, 7am to 7pm.

A gas furnace lights in a fixed order. The thermostat calls for heat and the inducer motor starts. A pressure switch confirms the vent is clear, the igniter glows, the gas valve opens, and the flame sensor confirms the burners lit. If any step fails, the control board shuts the furnace down, and most boards flash a code for it. The common failures are a dirty flame sensor, a cracked igniter, a pressure switch that will not close, and a clogged filter that trips the high limit.

A SmartWay visit starts with the heating diagnostic. The technician checks the thermostat, filter and wiring, then walks the furnace through each step of its start-up and tests the parts with a meter. You see which part failed and get the price before any work starts.

Common furnace problems

Furnace lights, then shuts off after a few seconds

The flame sensor is usually coated and cannot prove the flame, so the board closes the gas valve. Cleaning the sensor rod usually restores the signal, and a cracked or worn sensor is replaced. A bad ground or dirty burners can cause the same thing.

Blower runs but only cold air comes out

First check that the thermostat fan is set to auto, not on. If it is, the burners are not lighting. The usual causes are a cracked hot surface igniter, a gas valve that will not open, or the gas shut off at the furnace.

Furnace hums and clicks but never lights

The inducer runs but the pressure switch does not close. On a high-efficiency furnace that is often a clogged condensate trap or drain. It can also be a blocked vent, a cracked hose or a failed switch.

Heat turns on and off every few minutes

Poor airflow lets the furnace overheat and trip the high limit switch. A dirty filter, closed supply vents or a dirty blower wheel are the usual reasons. The fix is restoring airflow, then testing the limit.

Nothing happens when I turn the heat on

Power or the call for heat is not reaching the furnace. The technician traces the circuit from the breaker to the control board until the break is found. Thermostat faults are covered on /hvac/thermostats/.

Loud squeal or bang when the furnace starts

A squeal points to worn bearings in the blower or inducer motor, or a worn belt on an older belt-drive blower. Worn motor bearings usually mean replacing the motor. A bang at ignition is delayed ignition from dirty burners, fixed by cleaning the burners and checking gas pressure.

Signs you need furnace repair

  • Furnace runs longer than it used to and the house never reaches the set temperature: a dirty filter or weak airflow
  • Yellow or lazy burner flame instead of blue: dirty burners or a gas pressure problem, which needs a technician
  • Water in the drain pan under the furnace: a clogged condensate line on a high-efficiency furnace
  • Blinking light on the control board: a fault code that points to the failed step
  • Burning or electrical smell that does not fade after the first few minutes of heat
  • Higher gas or power bill for the same use: a dirty filter, poor airflow or a stuck sequencer
  • Some rooms warm and others cold: blocked supply vents, a duct that has come loose in the attic or a dirty blower wheel

What the visit includes

  1. The $65 heating diagnostic covers the trip and the time to find the fault, and it is waived if you repair.
  2. The technician checks the thermostat, filter and wiring, runs the ignition sequence or heat strips, and reads any code on the board.
  3. After the repair, the technician runs a full heating cycle and checks the flame, the airflow and the safety switches.

Common questions

How much does furnace repair cost?

It depends on which part failed. From least to most costly, the usual furnace repairs are cleaning a flame sensor, then replacing an igniter, blower capacitor or pressure switch, then a control board, inducer motor or blower motor. A cracked heat exchanger costs the most and often means weighing a new furnace. You get the price before any work starts.

How soon can someone come look at my furnace?

Same-day appointments are often available. Pick a time online or call (469) 607-4241 any day from 7am to 7pm.

What does the blinking light on my furnace mean?

It is a fault code from the control board. Most boards flash a set number of blinks that points to the step that failed, such as the pressure switch, the flame sensor or the high limit. The code chart is usually on the inside of the furnace door. Count the blinks before you turn the power off, because many boards clear the code when power is cut.

Why will my furnace not run after I changed the filter?

Check that the blower door is seated all the way. The panel presses a safety switch, and the furnace will not run while that switch is open. Also check that the filter arrow points toward the furnace and that the power switch next to the furnace is on.

Why does my furnace smell like burning when I first turn it on?

A dusty smell on the first run of the season is dust burning off the burners or heat strips. It fades after a short run. A burning or electrical smell that stays points to a motor or wiring problem, so turn the heat off and book a visit. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas company from outside.

Do you repair electric furnaces too?

Yes. Electric furnaces and air handlers use heat strips instead of burners. The usual failures are a burned-out element, a sequencer or relay that will not switch, or a tripped breaker from a shorted strip. On a heat pump system, the same heat strips serve as backup heat, and we repair those too.
