An air conditioner that stops cooling often has one failed part. The capacitor gives the compressor and outdoor fan motor the push they need to start, and it weakens with heat and age. The contactor is the switch that sends power to the outdoor unit, and its contacts pit and burn over time. A dirty condenser coil or low refrigerant from a leak makes the system run long and cool poorly. A clogged condensate drain backs water up and trips the float switch, which shuts the system off.

A SmartWay technician comes out from our shop at 3265 N McDonald St in McKinney, finds which part failed, and tells you the price before any work starts. If the system is more than 10 years old, the age ENERGY STAR gives for weighing a replacement, the technician tells you that along with the repair price.

Common AC repair problems

The AC runs but the house stays warm

A dirty condenser coil, a clogged filter or low refrigerant from a leak are the usual causes. So is a weak capacitor that lets the fan spin while the compressor sits idle.

The outdoor unit hums but the fan will not spin

This points to a failed run capacitor or a worn condenser fan motor. The technician tests the capacitor with a meter before condemning the fan motor.

There is ice on the copper line or indoor coil

A frozen evaporator coil comes from low airflow, such as a dirty filter or a failing blower motor, or from low refrigerant. The technician finds which one, because thawing the coil alone does not fix it.

Water is leaking around the indoor unit

The condensate drain line is clogged with algae and sludge, or the drain pan under the coil is cracked or rusted through. A clogged line is cleared and flushed. A cracked or rusted pan has to be replaced.

The thermostat calls for cooling and nothing turns on

When nothing comes on indoors or outdoors, the fault is in power or the low-voltage control circuit, and the thermostat page at /hvac/thermostats/ walks through those checks.

The breaker trips when the AC kicks on

A failing compressor, a shorted fan motor, a bad capacitor or damaged wiring at the disconnect can all trip a breaker. Resetting it over and over can damage the compressor, so leave it off and call.

Signs you need AC repair

  • Weak airflow from the vents: clogged filter, dirty evaporator coil or a failing blower motor.
  • Outdoor unit runs but the indoor blower does not: failed blower motor, blower capacitor or control board.
  • Burning smell from the outdoor unit or air handler: overheated wiring or a failing motor. Turn the system off and call.
  • Grinding or squealing from the outdoor unit: worn condenser fan motor bearings or a loose fan blade.
  • System short cycles on and off: dirty coil, low refrigerant tripping a pressure switch, or a failing thermostat.
  • Clicking with no start at the outdoor unit: worn contactor or failed capacitor.
  • Higher electric bill with the same settings: dirty coils or low refrigerant making the system run longer.

What the visit includes

  1. You book online or by phone, and a technician comes out from the McKinney shop 7 days a week, 7am to 7pm.
  2. The $65 diagnostic covers the trip and finding the fault. It comes off the bill if you go ahead with the repair.
  3. The technician checks the thermostat, electrical parts, refrigerant pressures, airflow and condensate drain to find the fault.
  4. The technician gives you the repair price, and you decide before any work starts.
  5. If a part has to be ordered, the technician schedules a return visit.

Brands and equipment

We repair central air conditioners from American Standard, Lennox, Carrier, Trane, Goodman, Rheem, Daikin and Bryant, and mini splits from Samsung and Cooper & Hunter. Common questions

How much does AC repair cost?

By part, from low to high: a capacitor or contactor, then a fan or blower motor, then a compressor, a coil or a refrigerant leak repair. The technician finds which part failed and tells you the price before any work starts.

Can someone come out today to fix my AC?

Same-day appointments are often available, depending on the schedule that day. Online booking shows the open times, or call (469) 607-4241 to ask about a specific day. We are open 7 days a week, 7am to 7pm.

Can you just add refrigerant without finding the leak?

It can be done, but the refrigerant will leak out again. An AC is a sealed system, so low refrigerant means there is a leak somewhere. The technician reads the pressures, looks for the leak, and prices the leak repair and the recharge so you can decide.

What can I check on the outdoor unit before I call?

Check the disconnect box on the wall next to the outdoor unit, the breaker for the condenser, and the air filter. The disconnect switch or pull-out block should be in the on position. The condenser breaker in the panel is usually a double breaker labeled AC or condenser. Replace the filter if it is gray. If the breaker trips again, leave it off and call.

My AC coil is frozen, what should I do?

Turn the cooling off and set the fan to on so the ice melts. That can take a few hours. Running the system frozen can send liquid refrigerant back to the compressor and damage it. Low airflow and low refrigerant are the two common causes, and the technician checks both.

Do you repair AC on commercial buildings?

Yes. We repair rooftop package units on commercial buildings as well as home systems, and one of our vans is lettered Commercial & Residential. Call (469) 607-4241 to set up a commercial visit.
